My Story

Making Dirt Look Pretty

Making dirt look pretty? Sounds a little silly when you say that. But that's what I do. Excavation is an art. Sure, anybody can dig a bit of dirt and move some soil around - but are you doing it correctly and efficiently? A skilled operator who knows their craft is an invaluable asset to your project.

Can You Dig It is who you need.

I started out after High School working for a Landscape Maintenance company. One week of labouring turned into 4.5yrs of looking after lawns and gardens, planting, turfing and irrigation. Learning to liaise with clients and managing their expectations was a big part of this and a crucial element to my future work. It was also during this time that I discovered my passion for working outside. This affection for the outdoors drove me to explore the opportunities for a more construction based aspect to my work.

A large landscaping company in Sydney's North took me on, and again, after a few weeks of casual work, I was offered full time employment. Retaining walls, stepping stones, paving, concrete, and other elements of hard landscaping were learnt and went hand in hand with plan reading, employee training, site evaluations and management, and problem solving.

Then the fun started. Machinery. Toys for adults. I was hooked. Digging, levelling, trenching, knocking walls over, ripping unwanted vegetation out. The list goes on. But I quickly realised that excavation is more than just get in and get it done. It takes finesse, knowledge, and constant evaluation.

I spent the next 13yrs honing my skills, not only as an operator, but also a Foreman/Site Manager. Running sites from either excavation only, or continuing on and completing the landscaping from start to finish, which gave me great judgement, skills and flexibility. But, after so long with the one company, I wanted to try something fresh.

This is what led me to start Can You Dig It. With my extensive experience in landscaping, I have a greater understanding of what your designer or architect is trying to achieve. I have the skills to read and understand landscape plans, work out levels and do set out, along with the ability to identify if site conditions suit the landscape plan, and adapt and suggest changes on the go.

This is what sets me apart from the majority of other operators, who require constant direction and supervision.
